Views of Ground Zero at approximately 9:00 AM on September 11, 2001

EXTENT
I was there that morning. That sunny Tuesday morning. Not because I
wanted to be there. Not because it was my job to be there. Not even
because it was my duty to be there. But simply because that was
where I lived. [more from Douglas Longenecker at 225 Rector Place...]
I remember picking up the telephone to dial London, and I heard a
loud bang...my pc screen flickered, the lights flashed on and off,
and I saw paper and dust floating through the office window
opposite where I sat - it was like an American 'ticker tape'
parade, as the paper swirled and danced in the air.

I was on the 30th floor of the North Tower. I had arrived at work
about 7:30 AM. That particular morning, I had already accomplished
a lot of work. All of a sudden, there was this dull thud, and the
building shook, back and forth.
[more from Aaron David Brensel on the 30th floor of 1 WTC...]
Alone. It describes my experience of the World Trade Center attack.
I was alone from the moment the first plane hit One World Trade Center
until I ran out of the building a mere minute before its collapse.

I passed the chapel, crossed Broadway and had just started up
Ann Street when I heard the unmistakable sound of a low flying
jet followed by a horrible explosion. People on the street thought
it was a bomb, but I was certain it was a plane.
[more from Dawn Knipe at 41 Park Row...]
I was in my office at 8:45 a.m. when the first explosion happened.
It was a short, very loud bang and the building shook. I heard some
screams and shouts from the street. My first guess was that two
trucks had collided head-on with an explosion or perhaps a crane
or a section of a building under construction had crashed to the ground.

I am Sergeant with NYC Health Department Police unit, I just
left my son 30 minutes earlier (8:05) at his new school in kew
gardens Queens, from there I proceeded to patrol the sites I
supervise and prepared to enter a meeting at 125 worth street.
[more from Cecilio Gonzalez at 125 Worth St...]
At that moment I seen a cloud of white smoke come into
the station at tha moment I made an announcement to the passengers
to get back on the train immediately for some reason everyone
listen and got on the train and I closed the door and we left the station.
[more from Carlos Oquendo on the #5 train at Chamber St...]
I was in the coffee room when I heard a loud boom and
someone screaming Ňoh my god!Ó I ran out of the coffee room
and into an office what was facing 1 World Trade Center.
The only thing I saw was fire coming out of the building
and paper shooting out of the building.
[more from Lorraine M. Escoto in 2 WTC...]
My beeper was going off as I had been paged by my
remote base office in Atlanta. They told me that there had
been a disaster but by this point I was staring right at
the scene, and told them that it was like a war zone.
[more from Jennifer Cabot Finkelstein at 26 Federal Plaza...]
Were looking at the Twin towers when we saw the first plane.
I commented to Lisa that I thought the plane was flying pretty low.
Then it went straight into the building. The sound of the
impact was like a sonic boom. Lisa said that it must
of been that the pilot had a heart attack.
[more from Mike Alvarado in front of City Hall...]
I walked down Essex Street to reach the JMZ subway line at Delancey.
It was when I began my routine commute that I noticed the top of one
of the towers was smoking. I called my roommate from a payphone
since my cell phone didn't seem to be working.
[more from Michael Nam at Essex and Delancy...]
I was exiting the subway station the morning of September 11th
at the Broadway Nassau stop(2 blocks away from 2WTC) and was on my
way to begin my work day on the 93rd floor there.
[more from Victoria at Broadway and Fulton...]
Every day, I took the PATH train to the base of the World
Trade Center, under the towers, though 5 WTC and then past 7WTC.
This morning, I got an early start. As I passed by the base entrance
of 7WTC, which is a barricaded truck entrance, I noticed the dozen
policemen that had recently started to guard this entrance.
[more from Michael Canavan at 7 WTC...]
When we got through the tunnel, the first stop we made
was Broadway-Nassau. People rushed into the train looking and
acting shaken up. They were all talking about wanting to get
out of there, away from the WTC disaster. I was reading and still
only half awake, and didn't pay much attention to these conversations.
[more from Lauren Mucciolo in downtown Manhattan...]
I felt a vibration as I approached the corner of Liberty & Nassau St.,
two blocks from the World Trade Center. The sunlight across the street
which was being reflected off another building started moving, and
I thought this could be something big.
[more from Donald Kardos at Liberty and Nassau...]
I was on the 68th floor of tower 2, working for Morgan Stanley,
and had started work at 8am as usual. Everything was rolling along like
any other day when all of a sudden, around 8:45, we started hearing a
sound like someone was pelting the side of a house with snowballs.
[more from Steve Collupy on the 68th floor of 2 WTC...]
I heard a rumble and felt a tremor. The lights flashed once.
I looked up and said to no one in particular, "Oh-oh. That can't
be good." But really didn't give it much thought. Within 15 seconds,
I heard yells and the sounds of running footsteps coming from across the floor.
[more from Anthony Aldridge on the 5th floor of 4 WTC...]
When the train pulled into the Wall Street Station, the smell
of smoke was quite thick. I assumed there was a track fire on Fulton
Street, which caused the delay, and the station skip. When I got to
the surface (approx. 3 blocks from the World Trade Center),
I saw people running toward the Trade Center.
[more from Evan Gallahou on Wall St...]
We heard the tremendous boom of the plane striking the North Tower
and a sickened staff person called out for all to see it. We had a clear
view of both towers over City Hall Park. There was a gaping black
hole in the North facade of the building and flames burning intensely.
